The Canadian Creators Collective is proud to announce the launch of a new award for young designers in Canada.
The CCC recognizes the challenges young Canadian designers face in establishing themselves. Through in-depth interviews with successful Canadian design studios, we identified the need for catalysts at different stages of design careers. With this Award, the CCC aims to provide meaningful opportunities for young designers: to present their work to the wider design community, showcase their projects, connect with the industry, expand their professional networks, and, most importantly, receive industry-recognized validation of their talent and the quality of their work through a qualified jury. The CCC believes this recognition will help young creators access more grants, residencies, job opportunities, and international awards.
The early years of practice are a critical period in the development of a design career. Yet the discipline often lacks robust funding structures at both the provincial and federal levels. Foundations rarely support emerging designers, leaving many to piece together partial funding or to adapt their work to other industries to finance their projects.
As a result, young designers quickly learn that creativity must extend beyond their practice to secure resources. Recognition, such as winning an award, can significantly increase a designer’s chances of being taken seriously. However, in Canada, such awards are largely absent. This is especially true not only within the CCC’s focus areas of furniture and interior design,
but also across the broader range of emerging practices connected to them.
In response, the CCC is introducing its first-ever Emerging Design Award to support and highlight the next generation of designers.
To be eligible, entrants must be based in Canada. Canadian citizens whose practice is primarily based outside of Canada (i.e., business registered and living abroad) are not eligible.
All applicants must not exceed six (6) years of professional practice.
The Award is open to both individuals and design teams (in which case, all team members must meet the eligibility criteria).
To be eligible in the Student category, applicants must be in the process of completing a university education in architecture, design, or a related discipline. Graduation in 2026 qualifies.
Applicants can submit work in any of four categories.
01 Form-giving
Material creations / objects
02 Spatiality
Spaces / urban / interiors
03 In the Ether
Virtual / digital / service / system design
04 Future-building
Research projects / new materials / speculative design / new technologies / ideas
Six (6) Awards will be given.
Four (4) category winners (Form-Giving, Spatiality, In the Ether, and Future-Building)
+ One (1) Student Award (All-category winner)
+ One (1) Best Overall (the Emerging
Designer of the Year)
Is the prize awarding work or practice?
The CCC Emerging Design Award recognizes the country’s top design talents. We will be reviewing multiple pieces of work, as well as written purpose statements, to evaluate process, ingenuity, execution, and professionalism. The winning designer or team will be awarded for their practice as a body of work.
How many winners will there be?
The jury will select one category winner, one student winner, and runners-up in each category. Only one designer or team will be the overall winner, the Emerging Designer of the Year.
What is the cost of submission?
Contest entry fees are CAD $125 per submission (designer or team). A reduced rate of CAD $75 is applied to all student entries.
Is it possible to enter multiple projects per category (or one project in multiple categories)?
The Award celebrates the designer or designers, not individual pieces of work, so we do not recommend submitting more than one entry.
Do I have to pay anything in addition to the entry fee?
There aren’t any surprise fees. We do not charge for trophies, certificates or for the right to use the CCC Emerging Design Award name. Some prizes do have additional costs (e.g., to take advantage of a free booth at Studio North, it will be necessary to transport items, print signage, etc.), but that is up to the winners.
Should I create new work to submit to the Award?
The intention of this Award is to celebrate a designer or design team’s skill and professionalism. We encourage you to submit your best existing work rather than dedicating time to creating new work.
How do I submit, and what is required?
Click on the link above to access the submission portal. You will be asked for samples of your work and to fill out a questionnaire. In addition, we will collect a photo and bio of the designer or team for promotional purposes.
What languages are submissions accepted in?
The submission portal accepts applications in both English and French; we do not accept submissions in any other language.
What are the prizes?
All applicants will receive a one-year membership as a CCC Friend, entitling them to receive insider invitations to public CCC events, access to the CCC Member Newsletter (so you can keep up to date on CCC Member activities, opportunities, and access our curated industry news). The Grand Prize winner will have the right to call themselves the Emerging Designer of 2026. They will receive a unique CCC Emerging Design trophy and a winner’s badge for digital applications. The Form-Giving category winner will receive a booth at Studio North during IDS 2027 (Toronto). All winners will be promoted throughout Canada through the CCC’s network of media partners and be included in a press kit distributed on the v2com newswire.
WHO CAN ENTER
The competition is open to emerging designers based in Canada, including both students and early-career professionals. Responsibility for proving eligibility rests with the applicant. Proof of eligibility will be requested from all Finalists; those unable to provide valid documentation will be disqualified and their applications removed from consideration without refund.
General Eligibility
In order to be eligible, entrants must have no more than six (6) years of professional practice experience.
Entrants must be based in Canada. Canadian citizens whose practice is primarily conducted outside of Canada (e.g., those living abroad with a business registered outside Canada) are not eligible.
Student Eligibility
Entrants submitting to the Student category must be currently enrolled in a university-level (undergraduate, graduate, or postgraduate) program in architecture, design, or a related discipline at the time of submission. Applicants graduating in 2026 are eligible.
Individual and Team Submissions
The competition is open to both individual entrants and design teams (studios).
For team submissions, all team members must meet the eligibility requirements outlined above. Teams must designate one member as the primary contact for communication and the administration of the submission.
Exclusions
CCC staff, Jurors, and their families, or collaborators are not eligible.
Proof of Eligibility
The following are accepted as proof of Canadian residency:
— a valid provincial driver’s license or health card
The following are accepted as proof of professional practice duration:
— a university degree issued in 2020 or later
— other proof of career history
A valid student ID card or other official university documentation is required to confirm student eligibility.
SUBMITTING WORK
The Award celebrates the designer or designers rather than individual pieces of work, so submitting more than one entry is not recommended. However, multiple entries will be accepted (ie, as a member of different teams or an individual who also submits as a member of a team).
Each submission requires a non-refundable contest entry fee of CAD $125 (or CAD $75 for student entries), payable at the time of submission, and may include up to twelve (12) images, portfolio links, and a written component.
PROCESS
A pre-selection jury composed of members of the CCC Board will review all entries. Those judged to meet pre-selection standards will be reviewed by the international Jury. Of these, five (5) finalists in each category and five (5) finalist student entries will then be vetted for eligibility. Any entries that fail to provide adequate proof of eligibility will be disqualified at this stage.
EVALUATION AND JURY
The international Jury is composed of industry experts. The names of the Jury members will be announced throughout the competition. Applicants who find themselves in a conflict of interest after learning of the Jury composition may contact the CCC to be reimbursed.
Applications will be judged on the basis of:
— the clarity of their ideas
— the quality of the solutions proposed
— the aesthetic value of the work (if applicable)
— their contribution to advancing the design profession
WINNING ENTRIES
Four (4) category winners will be announced in total. One overall winner (the Emerging Designer of the year) will be announced from among the category winners. If none of the four general category winners are students, one (1) Student winner will be announced overall.
The Jury retains the right not to award a category prize if no entry within that category is of sufficient merit.
Successful entrants will be selected by the jury and notified by email on or before 31 September 2026. The decision of the Jury is final.
A list of selected entries and award recipients will be published on the CCC website and partner platforms.
Due to the anticipated volume of submissions, the CCC jurors will not be able to contact unsuccessful applicants individually; all applicants will be informed of their results.
By submitting an application, you agree to be bound by these Terms and Conditions. If you do not agree, do not submit your work. Please read carefully before submitting your work.
TERMS
All submissions must be received by 11:59 PM (PDT), 30 June 2026. Applications received after this time cannot be considered. Selected entrants will be contacted by or before 31 September 2026.
To take full advantage of the benefits offered to winners, applicants agree to provide physical or digital versions of their work, ready for public display, suitably packaged or formatted as instructed by the CCC, and delivered by the requested deadline. Work that is not provided on time for exhibition, press deadline or other benefits will forfeit the right to this benefit.
Contest Entry Fees
Each submission requires the payment of a non-refundable contest entry fee.
The contest entry fee must be paid in full at the time of entry, and entries will not be considered complete until payment has been received. Each project must be submitted as a separate entry, and a contest entry fee applies to each entry.
The contest entry fee contributes to the administration of the competition, the jury review process, and the presentation or publication of selected work.
Entry
All entries must be submitted via the Fourwaves online submission platform. All marked fields must be completed as instructed. Payment must be completed for the submission to be accepted.
Only complete submissions will be considered. Refunds will not be granted to incomplete submissions unless there is a technical issue with the platform. In the event of an issue, the contest organizer (info@cccollective.org) must be contacted within 72 hours with proof of the issue (screenshots, payment records, or other evidence).
Third-Party Releases
Applicants are responsible for obtaining any necessary releases or permissions for materials not owned by them, including any identifiable individuals or third-party content appearing in the submission.
By submitting work, applicants confirm that they created the work or are authorized to use it, that co-authors or original sources are properly credited, and that the CCC’s use of the work for exhibition, promotion, or publication will not infringe on any third-party rights.
Image Release for Publicity
All selected entries may be published by the CCC or its authorized partners, sponsors, and funders in print, online, or digital media. Such use is limited to promotion, publicity, or educational purposes related to the CCC Emerging Designer Award 2026.
By participating, applicants grant the CCC and its authorized partners the right to use submitted work, including a name credit, in any media before, during, and after the award, without additional approval or compensation.
CONDITIONS
Applicants agree to be bound by these official rules.
The CCC may use selected work, applicant names, biographies, and project descriptions for publicity, promotion, and marketing purposes without additional approval or compensation.
Entries will be void if deemed not original, incomplete, illegible, damaged, fraudulent, or altered inappropriately. The CCC reserves the right to refuse entries that do not meet presentation or production standards.
If a selected applicant is later found ineligible or refuses a prize, the prize may be forfeited, and the CCC may select an alternate winner. The CCC reserves the right to extend or amend submission deadlines at its discretion; updates will be posted on the CCC website and the Fourwaves platform.
The decision of the CCC Jury is final.
Copyright
Applicants retain full copyright to their work. By submitting, applicants grant the CCC and its authorized partners the right to use the work in print, digital media, social media, newsletters, or other promotional channels.
